Light-DNA for Valkenburg
The town of Valkenburg is the heart of Limburg in the Netherlands. The characteristics of the city were translated into a light DNA. Included are the illustration of the medieval town, its nature and tourism. This resulted a lighting concept with the motto „Valkenburg, the pulsating heart of Limburg“ and „Valkenburg as host“.
In this sense, the „topography of light“ was created and thus created three color basics for the lighting design: cool blue, warm yellow and fiery red. The blue continues the theme of the River in Valkenburg with two arms wrap around the center of the project area, creating a small island.
Amber refers to the marl, which is a typical building material for many buildings of Valkenburg. And then there‘s the red, as an expression of the night life of Valkenburg. Valkenburg has a quiet, elegant daytime character, but in the evening it is busy. It is a small „Las Vegas“. Because of that the vibrant, lively colors should not be missing in the lighting plan.
In addition eight monuments, which occupy a central position in the lighting design, as they are especially identity for Valkenburg can be found in the plan: the reconstructed Geulenpoort, the renewed Grendelpoort, the Berkelpoort, the redesigned Den Halder Park, the former Town Hall (now Museum of Valkenburg), and the Spaans Leenhof (now Transport Association). Implemented lighting design concept combines the readability of the place with sustainable and modern technology.
