We are implementing a project co-financed by European Funds

Project Title: “Development of a prototype of an innovative system supporting the urban lighting ecodesign process, which combines spatial data, urban semantics, and artificial intelligence methods to optimize design decisions.”

Project Number: FENG.01.01-IP.02-0224/25

Program: European Funds for a Modern Economy 2021-2027

Measure: SMART Path

Project Objectives

The objective of the project is to develop and build an innovative system for performing three-dimensional and three-domain lighting calculations, including planning, ecodesign, and management of urban lighting infrastructure.

The developed system will perform calculations on a city-wide scale, combining three optimization domains: road and street lighting (horizontal surfaces), light on facades, windows, and vegetation (vertical surfaces), and sky-glow light pollution.

This will introduce: lighting order and improved quality of life for residents, increased safety in public spaces, energy and operating cost savings, and environmental benefits (counteracting light smog, protecting fauna and flora, CO2 reduction).

Tasks Implemented in the Project

The project is implemented within the R&D module and includes 4 research and development tasks:

  1. Development of a classification model for urban spaces and assigning lighting requirements to them based on the functional and spatial context.
  2. Development of algorithms for transformation and integration of 2D/3D spatial data for the needs of lighting analyses.
  3. Development of the HVSky three-dimensional calculation module and optimization of lighting strategies, taking into account diverse spatial scenarios.
  4. Construction and testing of a prototype system for planning, ecodesign, and implementation of lighting strategies in cities.

Target Groups

The following will benefit from the results of the project:

  • lighting designers, thanks to a tool that shortens the time required to prepare a master plan by approx. 80%, 80%,
  • local governments, cities, and municipalities, thanks to the possibility of creating coherent, sustainable lighting strategies,
  • lighting infrastructure managers, thanks to a tool supporting modernization decisions,
  • lighting fixture manufacturers, thanks to the possibility of integrating product libraries with the system,
  • city residents, indirectly, thanks to better lighting quality, increased safety, and reduced light pollution.

Planned Effects and Results

  • prototype of an operational system containing 4 modules: automated building of urban lighting strategies, multidimensional city model, ecodesign, and lighting infrastructure management,
  • coverage of the city surface with a unified 3D calculation model – 100% (from a baseline of 20%),
  • reduction of the time required to prepare a master plan and three-domain calculations from approx. 100 hours to 20 hours (an 80% reduction),
  • simultaneous optimization of lighting in 3 domains (horizontal / vertical / sky),
  • implementation of the project results into the business activity of STUDIO DL.

Project Value

  • Total project cost: PLN 4,259,975.40
  • European Funds contribution: PLN 2,945,892.10
