Remscheid | Lighting master plan

The goal of a tailor-made lighting concept for the city of Remscheid is the sustainable enhancement of the cityscape at night. The implementation of the lighting master plan in the city center area is intended to create atmospheric spaces for residents and visitors.
An essential aspect of the new lighting design is to make the nocturnal urban spaces more legible. At the same time, possible undesirable developments that could have a lasting impact on the cityscape at night are to be curbed.
Important buildings such as the town hall, the water tower and the town church, which form the urban silhouette, are to be staged by the new lighting concept in a way that contributes to successful town marketing. This is achieved by visually emphasizing them in the nighttime cityscape using a coherent lighting concept. The focal points of the Remscheid lighting concept were determined together with the citizens. One of the important concept elements is the entire Alleestraße including the adjacent squares.

Lighting hierarchy
The nocturnal urban space is ordered by a clever lighting hierarchy. Here, all buildings used to accentuate the appearance of the city were typified. In order to enable forward-looking planning, selected Remscheid city center buildings were related to each other in an exemplary manner. This hierarchy is divided into three levels based on the perceived importance of the buildings for the urban identity. This results in simple yet comprehensible sets of rules for light and lighting that guarantee harmonious cityscape development in the long term
