Ludwigsburg | Arsenalplatz
Arsenalplatz in Ludwigsburg has been transformed from a parking lot into a vibrant multifunctional public square. Mann Landschaftsarchitektur won first prize in the urban design competition with the “Green Salon” concept, where nature, social interaction, and public life come together.
Visitors enjoy seating areas, drinking fountains, a water feature, ping-pong tables, and a pavilion with a kiosk and outdoor terrace. The square is framed by a north-south oriented arrangement of trees – including chestnuts, bluebells, and bird cherries – giving the space structure and identity. The lighting design for this 8,000 m² square is carefully considered. Instead of uniform illumination, the team implemented zonal lighting that highlights key areas, emphasizes main pathways, and creates a calm, atmospheric ambiance. Branches and leaves extend into the light cones, producing subtle, dynamic shadow patterns on the ground. All fixtures were selected for sustainability and ecological sensitivity, minimizing light pollution and stray light while maximizing the visitor experience. The lighting is dynamically adjustable for daytime and evening use. After 11:00 pm, it dims to about 10%, while during events it can be temporarily increased to ensure safety and comfort. Project Highlights:
Multifunctional square: suitable for recreation, play, and public events.
Subtle lighting: enhances the space and nature without glare. Flexible and individually controllable: each fixture can be adjusted separately.
Sustainable and eco-friendly: minimal light pollution and respect for flora and fauna.
