Hildesheim | Domäne Marienburg
Studio DL has developed a lighting concept for the medieval castle estate that meets the safety requirements in order to be used as the cultural campus of the University of Hildesheim and for operating a courtyard café, the “castle theater” and the library. Instead, individual bollards were developed to provide a special light distribution for pathway lighting. In addition, power outlets have been integrated to allow extensive use of the courtyard space for events. The feeling of the space is communicated primarily through vertical elements.
Along the stone barn ornamental trees are emphasized, and the half-timbered facades opposite are softly illuminated. In contrast, the natural stone facades of the core castle are lit more dramatically with a grazing light so that the texture is highlighted. In order to support the different architectural periods and thereby the character of the ensemble, uniformity was dismissed when choosing lighting fixtures.
