Visuals Lichtontwerp Binnenhof
We are proud of this sneak peek at the future evening view of the 800-year-old Binnenhof, the iconic heart of The Hague and symbol of Dutch democracy.
The lighting design, developed by our Studio DL Lighting Design team in collaboration with Karres en Brands, BiermanHenket, Architecten Cie, Merk-X, WDJ Architecten, the Municipality of The Hague, and the client, the Central Government Real Estate Agency, combines innovative technology with respect for the historical value of the complex. The design enriches the evening experience of the city and the complex with subtle lighting that enhances the monumental architecture and the diverse characters of the courtyards. By giving key elements such as the entrance pavilion, the gates, and the new bridge a prominent role in the evening scene, an inviting and well-organized public space is created.
Sustainability is central to the design. By using LED technology, integrated into existing historic fixtures, we minimize both energy consumption and light pollution. The result is a nearly invisible addition that limits the ecological impact while simultaneously enhancing the evening experience of this iconic complex.

Work in progress
The Binnenhof in The Hague is the political and historical heart of the Netherlands, an ensemble of buildings that has shaped Dutch governance and culture for over 800 years and stands as the embodiment of Dutch democracy. Designing lighting here means more than illuminating buildings, it means interpreting history, highlighting architecture, and connecting the complex with the city. Studio DL is creating an evening atmosphere that is layered, inviting, and responsive to each area’s unique character. The photos show the lighting at maximum intensity during a test evening; the final composition will be further fine-tuned in terms of arrangement and intensity.
Telling a story with light
Lighting at the Binnenhof works in layers. Base lighting ensures safety and highlights key façades and routes. Accents bring gates, bridges, and architectural details to life, while object lighting adds depth to fountains and other features. Interior and exterior lighting harmonize, so the complex is experienced as a cohesive whole.
Tested on site
Every important decision is evaluated on location. Designers, architects, and technicians test how light interacts with the architectural elements, its textures, and colours. Luminance measurements and visual analyses ensure that what works on paper also comes alive in reality.
Ecology
Subtle and sustainable LED beams are precisely controlled to limit light pollution and respect the nocturnal habitats of bats. Innovative technology allows light to be sculpted with elegant gradients that enhance architecture without overwhelming it. Historical lanterns are restored and upgraded, combining character with energy efficiency.
A unique atmosphere for every space
he Opperhof emphasizes formal grandeur, while gardens and intimate courtyards create a serene, welcoming feel. Gates mark transitions between the city and the complex, with lighting subtly guiding visitors throughout the evening.
The result is a lighting design that enhances architecture, highlights history, and creates an inviting, memorable experience for visitors and the city alike – all while combining aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability.
