Dom Römer Quarter – Frankfurt
The revived city center of Frankfurt is beginning to flourish: Hand in hand with numerous project partners, the new LED lighting design was developed for the district based on the historic layout creating a special atmosphere.
Frankfurt‘s new center was created in a total area of 7,000 square meters by fall 2018 . The quarter represents a successful mix of new buildings and reconstructed buildings that picks up on typical design elements of Frankfurt‘s historic old town. As a link between the cathedral and the Römer, the quarter has a character typical of the old town and brings historical structures once again to the foreground which are to be attractively illuminated at night. Urban lighting is always also spatial light and should imperceptibly emphasize the atmosphere of the place without stepping into the foreground.
Due to the heterogeneous building structures as well as the peculiarities of the individual facades, each light fixture has been specifically planned in terms of positioning as well as mounting and combines both architectural and urban design concerns. The luminaires were selected from the existing documentation based on a square luminaire housing after extensive discussion and various proposals. Two independently controllable LED-based lighting components inside the luminaire provide, on the one hand, standard-compliant illumination of the paths and, on the other hand, a veil of light on the facades contrib-uting to the feel of the space. The specially designed lighting puts the nighttime perception of the space in particular focus. Selected individual accents in the quarter were subtly emphasized through illumination creating an atmospheric ambience.
The project was awarded GOLD in the category “Best Urban Regeneration Project“ at the MIPIM Awards in March 2019!
