Deventer | Lebuïnuspleinen
Have you had a chance to experience Grote Kerkhof recently? This square, surrounded by characteristic historic mansions and decorated with inviting terraces under ancient trees, has now been beautifully transformed. With the majestic Lebuïnus Church towering above the renovated landscape.
Commissioned by the Municipality of Deventer and according to the visionary design of landscape architects BoschSlabbers, Grote Kerkhof, Stromarkt and the connecting areas have undergone a refreshing and extensive makeover. Green terraces, a tranquil water feature and impressive ‘staff masts’ that rise above the trees, as a tribute to the past. “Grandeur and geniality” now exist side by side – powerful and gentle, day and night.
More than ten years ago, Studio DL illuminated the Lebuïnus Church with a spectacular nocturnal design. Now the same team has successfully translated the qualities of the new landscape design into harmonious evening lighting. It is an evolution from a single image – the Lebuïnus Church as the protagonist – to a comprehensive nocturnal composition.
Grote Kerkhof At the main entrance of the Lebuïnus Church, terraces with trees and restaurant tables create a charming atmosphere. Romantic fairy lights with warm, glowing light hang above the chairs. On the other side, at the town hall, a tranquil fountain beautifully reflects the illuminated church at night. Light also sparkles on the new surrounding trees. The impressive ‘staff masts’, designed by BoschSlabbers, contribute to the evening ambiance. Low light points provide functional and attractive lighting of the square. The central part remains free of pylons, preserving the characteristic open space and contributing to the grandeur of the landscape. Because of this unlit central area, extra attention is paid to vertical lighting in the design – tree lighting, facade lighting and church lighting create a comfortable and atmospheric environment. Routes along facades receive basic lighting from wall fixtures inspired by historical fixtures. Some facades have soft, friendly lighting, which improves the evening experience and emphasizes architectural nuances. The monumental three-light lanterns in front of the town hall received a subtly adapted lighting technique for optimal effect. The Grote Kerkhof now has a clear nocturnal identity, which strengthens the new landscape design, supports the area functions and presents the city’s heritage in a dignified manner.
Kleine Poot Kleine Poot retains the characteristic play of light circles and shadows on the sidewalk through the new version of the historic fixture. The pump, old wall and Butter Market are now part of an enchanting nighttime spectacle. Details and decorations are elegantly visible.
Stromarkt Stromarkt has made the transition from street to square. Spaciousness has returned to landscaping, with lighting strategically placed outdoors to minimize obstacles while providing sufficient illumination for safe movement. The library, as the dominant building, is now softly and elegantly illuminated, seamlessly integrated into the nocturnal charm of Stromarkt. Visitors are welcomed with light from within the building and benches softly lit at the entrance, accompanied by new trees.
